..If… (The School Business Leader edit)

February 12, 2018

If you can keep your Head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust your Head when all men doubt them,

But make allowance for their doubting you;

If you support and don’t expect supporting,

Get moaned about, and not resort to moans,

If underfunded, don’t stop funding biscuits

It won’t look good, and will cause staff room groans:

If you can dream—and underpin your dreaming;

with a costed plan and gantt chart in a frame

If you can meet with Ofsted and Accountants

And treat those two inspectors just the same;

If you can bear to face the 3 year deficit

Twisted by cuts to make a trap for fools,

Or watch buildings unrepaired around you, crumble,

And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of your achievements

And risk them on one turn of ‘challenge-the-boss’,

And lose, and swallow down your deep frustrations

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To keep working on long after most are gone,

And so hold on when there is no gin in you

Except the will which says to you: ‘Work on!’

If you can deal with crowds and keep your smile fixed,

Walk with Governors—nor lose the common touch,

If no complaints nor allegations hurt you,

If you can hit the fire bell, but not too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving lunch break

And grab a sandwich just before the bell,

Your are a Leader and all what comes within it,

And—which is more—you’ll be an SBL!
